Evaluating Inventory
Outcomes

This is a fun way to look at how you will manage in the industry.  This inventory is taken on the Internet using an inventory created by CareerPerfect.com.  The inventory measures your style of managing.  It looks at the type of environment you would like to work in.  It assesses the type of  people you would like to work with.  After completing the exercise record your score and print out the exercise.  Now go to the Work Preference Inventory and complete it. 
     The outcomes for the inventory are listed below your score.  This exercise should give you a better idea of the environment you would be most comfortable working in and how you will most enjoy working with others.  It may seem as though you have no control over this aspect of your job, but you do.  You will later intreview professionals that are doing what you dream of and you need to be attnetive to the type of organization that interests you.  Listed below are some summaries of the managerial types.
  • A. Focuser (Self starter) This managerial type is focused on the task at hand.  Is willing to take charge and work independently.  Can be authoritative, directive and act practically in order to complete a task. This manager is usually experienced, a strong leader that sets clear goals and can deliver predictable outcomes.  This is basically a doing type of person.
  • B. Relater (Enthusiastic) This managerial type has a large concern for people and relates well with people.  S/he looks at the big picture and conducts coordinating functions with a teamwork approach. Is democratic in organizing staff and has a flexible manner.  The main thrust is focused on the group and encourages participation.  Sets broad goals that involve others, tries to influence others in a positive way while observing and participating in the effort.
  • C. Integrator (Finisher) This managerial style tries to integrate and understand why, or the significance of the effort.  Focuses on problem-solving or diagnosing situations in a way that is innovative.  Strengths in planning and is self-directed and self-reliant.  Many times questions situations and uses personal reasoning.  Welcomes input from others, listens well and takes careful time to assess the situation before making decisions.
  • D. Operator (Detailer) This managerial style needs to know how things are to be done properly.  Focuses on details, monitoring and analyzing and documents activities well.  Is an accountable person that has strengths in controlling activities in a systematic way.  Has concerns for compliance with policy, works with systems well, follows procedures and is aware of boundaries.  Feels comfortable with repetition of activities and improves with each round.

When you have completed this exercise write several paragraphs about its meaning to you as a professional.  Include some of the attributes listed above for the managerial type for which you have the highest score.   If you have more than one style that has similar high scores, pick out the attributes you think best describes you, and include them in your writing.

 When you have finished this exercise, you have completed all of the exercises in this chapter.  You should now have a better idea of who you are and what kinds of jobs, activities, etc. that are the most satisfying.  At this time go to the , Summary Exercise, or return to the Chapter Index page.
